Certainly could be that or something similar. Sampling internet traffic by way of an optional IE toolbar is interesting, but probably not super accurate.

One thing I find interesting about the alexa stats is that they're all relative. So, the graph I posted is showing "pageviews per million", in other words for every million pages viewed by people with the alexa toolbar, about 100 were to boston.com. If a change such as an ie7 upgrade affected sampling of boston.com traffic at rates similar to traffic as a whole, you wouldn't expect to see a downturn.

But when <a href="http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?site0=boston.com&site1=bostonherald.com&site2=&site3=&site4=&y=p&z=1&h=300&w=500&range=3y&size=Medium&url=boston.com" rel="nofollow">compared to views of bostonherald.com</a>, you can see a definite downward trend in boston.com traffic. Maybe boston.com readers are higher up on the new tech adoption curve than herald readers?

Probably the installation(upgrade) to ie7 breaks or uninstalls the alexa toolbar.
